Online Symposium
In August 2021, a Wai 262 Symposium was held. This was the first hui led by the Wai 262 representative rōpū, which saw 400 people register to attend, 9,600 collective streams and a reach of 15,300 views on social media platforms. This event was the first Wai 262 claimant whānau (Taumata Whakapūmau) led kōrero in the history of the Wai 262 Flora and Fauna claim. It was live streamed via Radio Waatea. Also captured on a Podcast by the team from Free FM.
See below coverage of speakers who attended the Wai 262 Symposium.
"There are some some significant shifts ahead as well as a tribute to those who were the original claimants and their uri who are carrying the kaupapa forward"
"Taonga works and mātauranga Māori should be legally protected."
The claimants vision and aspiration seeks to restore “te tino rangatiratanga o te Iwi Māori in respect of flora and fauna and all of our taonga.” Taonga being those things and values which we treasure, material, non-material, tangible and intangible.
